Be an Aware Pedestrian.

Check out this excerpt from the recent Safer Driver Course I took from AARP.*

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian deaths were up 4% in 2010, the most recent data available. The uptick was due in large part to distracted driving and distracted walking. In 2011, more than 1,000 people were treated in emergency rooms for injuries caused by walking while talking or texting on their cell phone.

Be sure to be aware of your surroundings, especially in a busy parking lot. Watch for cars, signs, and other people. When it comes to safety, multitasking is never a good idea, so put the phone away until you reach a safe location.
